The exotic headgears and ivory armlets are other famous traditional things of Nagas which steal the show. In earlier times, the fighters had to prove their bravery, to wear these.

In spite of the tremendous modernity entering into their lives, the people have preserved their customs and legacy. The state is called the 'Land of Festivals' and people dwelling here have a fondness of celebrating the deeds of their ancient warriors and folk heroes.

Moreover, the medleys that immortalize love stories, folk tunes, and gospel songs are also cherished. The festival is named after Hornbill, one of the most respected bird species in the state. Interestingly, the importance of the bird is reflected in several tribal cultural expressions, songs, and dances.

Why is Hornbill Festival Celebrated in Nagaland?

Hornbill is the name of a bird that has been depicted and respected by the Nagas for ages. The folklore and songs sung during the entire Hornbill Festival Nagaland depict the importance of this bird.

The feathers of the bird were used to decorate the headgears of the people and warriors of Nagas. Initially, the government tried to persuade people not to hunt these birds and rather preserve them, but all of it went in vain. Due to extensive hunting, this species of bird reached the brink of extinction and that became an eye-opener for Nagas.

In the year 2000, Hornbill Festival in Nagaland was celebrated for the first time and it included folk songs and dance, traditional games, and some songs from their wars. And today, it's a grand affair where people from around the world come to become a part of it.

UNLEASHING THE ECONOMIC POTENTIAL OF NER

19 th - 21 st September, 2024

Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Exhibition Ground, Gate No.2, Guwahati (Assam)

North Eastern region of India is blessed with the bounty of nature. The region is unique in many respects. While abundance of natural resources signifies the potential that the region has, however at the same time absence of any significant business and industrial activities highlight lack of jobs & business growth. Resultantly the region is still characterized as economically backward. While Government of India is committed to creating opportunities for youth and providing social and industrial infrastructure for its overall and rapid development, the growth so far has been less than desired, largely due to the low level of the business and industry engagement and poor focus on local competence building and partnerships among the development agencies, industry, institutions and the Governments.

Since the North Eastern region is largely rural and horticultural production dominates the agri-landscape, any development planning has to largely focus on the farm and rural sector. Therefore there is need for partnerships for training and competence building, investments, marketing, processing, projects and infrastructure development to accelerate growth and economic activities, leading to more jobs, incomes and opportunities for the people of this region, which comprises of eight States, namely: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

The proposed Vibrant North East 2024, comprising of Agri and Rural Expo, Industrial Expo and North East Development Meet will provide an opportunity for the region to showcase its potential and opportunities for the rest of the country. This will offer what it has to, for partnering & engaging to explore the opportunities & participating in the growth & development of the region in general. The three day meet will bring a large number of national & international stakeholders from the Industry, Institutions, Government and the development sectors to showcase the programs & schemes, products, technologies & services; and deliberate upon the issues & opportunities for the way forward. CARD envisions providing exposure to farmers by sharing successful agribusiness models and sensitizing them with policies, schemes, technologies & markets. Rewarding evolution will be evident when farmers themselves become role models for fellow farmers.
